Settlement Reached in Washington County Civil Lawsuit Claiming Harm From Marcellus Shale Drilling

On August 25, a sealed settlement involving a gag-order on the plaintiffs, was reached in a civil action against Range Resources, Mark West Energy Partners, and Williams Gas/Laurel Mountain Midstream Partners. The Hallowich family alleged harm to their health and property value due to air pollution and water contamination originating from the Marcellus Shale drilling operation near their farm in Mount Pleasant Township. The Hallowich family complained of burning eyes, sore throats, headaches and earaches; and claimed the presence of cancer-causing organic compounds in their well such as ethyl-benzene, toluene, styrene and tetra-chloro-ethylene. The settlement was reached behind closed doors and the Washington County Common Pleas Court judge indefinitely sealed the complete case file.
