COUNTY COUNCIL IN UK DELAYS CONSIDERATION OF PERMIT APPLICATION FOR SHALE GAS EXPLORATION

On June 24, 2015, the Lancashire County Council’s Development Control Committee decided to delay consideration of Cuadrilla Resources Ltd.’s application to develop the Preston New Road site for shale gas exploration. If granted, this would be the first shale gas well drilled since the moratorium in the UK was lifted on December 13, 2012.

The Committee will be reviewing the application until June 29, 2015, to provide them with time to consider the written legal advice they received during the hearing. The adjournment followed a two-day hearing during which there were significant protestations from the County’s residents according to media reports.

Cuadrilla Resources applied for a planning permit from the Committee on June 2, 2014, with the intent to construct and drill four exploratory wells using hydraulic fracturing.
On June 25-26, 2015, the Development Control Committee will be considering another application from Cuadrilla Resources to develop a second unconventional well site.
