After 30 days of public comment, the Wyoming Oil and Gas
Commission has started the formal rulemaking process to establish baseline
water testing in the state. The regulations
would require a baseline sample of water to be taken prior to the drilling of
the well and for multiple follow-up samples to be taken after drilling is
completed. WOGCC’s proposed regulations do not require the installation of
groundwater monitoring wells on leased lands. They do, however, require testing
at minimum for chemicals listed in the regulations and provide reporting
standards for the detection of stray methane gas in a water supply.
For more information on the regulations, visit the WOGCC’s website.
