On March 20, 2013 an initiative by industry and
environmental groups created a center that will provide shale producers with independent
certification of performance standards.
The newly formed Center for Sustainable Shale Development (CSSD) has set 15 initial performance
standards addressing environmental and safety concerns, which will form the
basis of the center’s independent third party certification process.
The initiative is complementary to the regulatory
framework and developed from a recommendation of the Shale Gas Production Subcommittee
of the U.S. Secretary of Energy.
