In a press release issued September 20, 2011 the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has announced a major reorganization aimed at improving its efficiency and transparency. According to the DEP’s website, the Bureau of Oil and Gas Management will be elevated to a deputate with the goal of improving and unifying DEP’s permitting, inspection and enforcement efforts in the Marcellus Shale industry. Other changes include the creation of the Environmental Cleanup and Brownfields Bureau along with the Bureau of Conservation and Reclamation, and the forming of the new Office of Pollution Prevention and Energy Assistance.
