The Natural Gas Subcommittee of the Secretary Energy Advisor Board has submitted a report on August 18, 2011, to Energy Secretary Steven Chu containing recommendations for reducing the environmental impacts of shale gas production. The subcommittee’s report was generated as part of President Obama’s “Blueprint for a Secure Energy Future.” The subcommittee’s stated task was to “identify immediate steps that can be taken to improve the safety and environmental performance of fracking and to develop…consensus recommended advice to the agencies on practices for shale extraction to ensure the protection of public health and the environment.” The final 180-day report is expected on November 18, 2011.
