UPDATE – COUNTY COUNCIL IN UK REFUSES TWO PERMIT APPLICATIONS FOR SHALE GAS EXPLORATION

On June 26 and 29, the Development Control Committee of the Lancashire County Council refused Cuadrilla Resources Ltd.’s applications to develop two unconventional well sites, respectively located at Roseacre Wood and Preston New Road.

Concerning the Roseacre Wood site, the Committee based its decision on the grounds that it would produce a constant increase in traffic. The Committee agreed with the County planners’ prior recommendation that it could lead to “an unacceptable impact on the rural highway network and on existing road users, particularly vulnerable road users and a reduction in overall highway safety that would be severe.”

As for the application to develop the Preston New Road site, the Committee decided that shale gas extraction will create noise, visual and landscaping impacts despite a contrary prior recommendation from the County planners. The planners determined that permission should be granted with certain conditions, such as time limits, working management, water protection, ecology, air and noise control, and remediation with respect to the Environmental Impact Assessment that was submitted along with the application.
