On October 9, the European Parliament approved rules requiring energy companies to conduct environmental assessments before fracking with 332 votes in favor 311 votes against, and 14 abstentions. The rules must still go through another round of voting in Parliament once an agreement on final language is reached.
This vote follows a previous version that had tried to ban fracking entirely in November of 2012. The vote to ban fracking, was rejected by 391 votes to 262, with 37 abstentions.
