EIA study estimates the United States will top world hydrocarbon production for 2013

On October 4, 2013, the Energy Information Administration announced estimates that the United States will top Russia and Saudi Arabia in hydrocarbon production for 2013. The EIA study showed that American natural gas production increased by 3 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) since 2008. It attributes a large percentage of this growth to development in the Marcellus shale. The study also showed that American petroleum production increased 7 quadrillion Btu since 2008.
