On August 2, 2013, the Pennsylvania Department of
Environmental Protection announced updates for its long-term Marcellus
air-sampling study. The DEP started the study in July 2012, and announced in
the August 2 release that sampling will continue in the southwest region of
Pennsylvania until the end of 2013. The final report is expected to be complete
in the spring of 2014.
According to the press release, three prior short term
studies by the DEP did not detect levels of air pollutants that would violate
federal air quality standards. Further, the previous studies did not detect any
compounds associated with Marcellus drilling.
