On December 7, 2011, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has asked 99 operators involved in the development, production, transmission and processing of unconventional natural gas to submit their information on air emissions for 2011. According to DEP's press release, all data must be submitted to DEP by March 1, 2012. DEP plans to use this information when it reports its emissions inventories to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency at the end of 2012.
