On January 12, 2011, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) released the Northeastern Pennsylvania Marcellus Shale Short-Term Ambient Air Sampling Report. The study concluded that certain natural gas constituents including methane, ethane, propane and butane were present in the air near Marcellus Shale drilling operations. However, the study did not identify concentrations of any compound that would likely trigger air related health issues, as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and ozone levels were all within the allowable National Ambient Air Quality Standards. Also, I think that it is worth noting that the EPA is coming into the picture with some new standards for controlling air pollution from drilling.
